Convert 300 DPI to pixels for any print size
At 300 DPI, 4 × 6 needs 1200 × 1800 pixels, A4 needs 2480 × 3508, and US Letter needs 2550 × 3300. For any other size, multiply each dimension in inches by 300.
Check whether my image is large enoughCalculate effective PPIThere is no single pixel size called 300 DPI because DPI describes pixel density at a physical size. A 4 × 6 inch print and an A4 print therefore need different pixel dimensions.
Use the calculator with the final print dimensions, or start with the reference table for the most common paper and photo sizes.
Calculate pixels at 300 DPI
Multiply each print dimension in inches by 300. A 4 × 6 inch print becomes 1200 × 1800 pixels.
For dimensions in millimetres, divide by 25.4 first, then multiply by 300. Round to the nearest whole pixel for export.
- Width in inches × 300 = width in pixels
- Height in inches × 300 = height in pixels
- Changing only a file’s DPI label does not create new detail
Choose the final print size first
The same image can meet 300 PPI at a small print size and fall below it when enlarged. Always calculate against the intended finished dimensions.
If the image ratio differs from the paper, account for cropping or borders before judging whether enough pixels remain.
Know when less than 300 PPI can work
300 PPI is a strong target for close-viewed photographs, fine type, and detailed artwork, but it is not a universal pass-or-fail rule.
Large posters viewed from farther away can often look acceptable at 150–240 PPI. Use a proof when the source image is close to the limit.

Frequently asked questions
How many pixels is 300 DPI?
300 DPI means 300 pixels for each printed inch. The total pixel dimensions depend on the physical width and height.
How many pixels is A4 at 300 DPI?
A4 at 300 DPI is approximately 2480 × 3508 pixels.
Is 300 DPI the same as 300 PPI?
For image-size calculations, the relevant value is PPI. DPI is often used informally to mean the same target density.
